Leukemia: Innovative treatments thanks to cellular immunotherapy

Although it is encouraging to see that we are beating more and more blood cancers thanks to traditional chemotherapy and radiation therapy treatments, leukemias and lymphomas are still responsible for far too many deaths in children and young adults.

For those cases that are resistant to the usual treatments, cellular immunotherapy is a promising solution that has already been successful at the HMR. Thanks to the support of the Cole Foundation, which granted $50,000 for research in the field, Dr. Heather Melichar and her team are working on increasing the efficacy and sustainability of these avant-garde treatments. Their goal is to improve the treatment options available to patients as of today. The potential of this research is even greater as it will not only impact blood cancer treatments but other cancers as well, namely those affecting the lungs and kidneys.
