Home diagnosis of jaundice
Medical staff at HMR screen for jaundice in newborns on a daily basis. For an uncomplicated delivery, the average hospital stay for mothers and their newborns is between 24 and 36 hours. However, jaundice sometimes develops or progresses after the infant goes home.
Thanks to the five portable jaundice meters that were purchased, nurses at the local community health centre (CLSC) can properly fulfil their mandate of accompanying new parents at home and helping make sure their bundles of joy are healthy.
The portable jaundice meter gives nurses an accurate reading of the amount of bilirubin in the blood, just like at the hospital. Being able to assess these tiny patients in the comfort of their home fosters well-being for both newborns and their parents while helping them avoid unnecessary travel.
