Eye diseases: Unprecedented advances

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the central part of the retina, which is essential to our vision.

Although this disease is the primary cause of vision loss in people over 50, Dr. Gilbert Bernier’s research is paving the way for new therapeutic solutions to restore eyesight. His work has led to the creation of an innovative technology that helps generate photoreceptors from human stem cells. This is an exceptional breakthrough as it will help counter the phenomenon responsible for AMD: Irreversible destruction of cells that play a crucial role in the retina. Thanks to these discoveries, patients suffering from incurable degenerative diseases such as AMD, or Stargardt disease and pigmentary retinopathy, now have renewed hope of a cure.
