Better manage stroke

Did you know that strokes are the third leading cause of death in Canada? Given this grim statistic, it is vital to reduce their impact by streamlining access to treatment and coordinating care for high-risk patients.

Every year, some 350 patients are admitted to HMR after having had a stroke. Thanks to your donations, the HMR Foundation created a unit specially designed for these patients. In addition to dedicated beds, the unit provides access to a telemetry system used to monitor patients’ hearts continuously: electrodes, attached to a special box that patients wear on them at all times, transmit their heartbeat in real time to a monitor in the nurses’ station. Heart arrhythmias, a major cause of strokes, are detected as soon as they begin. The unit quickly proved how essential it is.
