A few bruises on the arm, then a strange pain in the hand. These seemingly harmless ailments were actually hiding a blood cancer. Eric shares his story with us. In 2018, 55-year-old Eric Mackeage wears many hats: firefighter, but also father, husband and entrepreneur. Overnight, he also became a patient at the Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont (HMR).

One Couple, Two Cancers

Being told you have cancer is a life-changing news; doubly so since, at that same time, his wife was also facing the disease! A terrifying situation for the couple… and their children.

For his wife and children, Eric rolled up his sleeves and decided to fight. Unfortunately, conventional treatments did not work. The cancer was taking over.

Cancer affects one in two people in Quebec! You can imagine our dismay and that of our children, who saw their two parents affected at the same time.Eric

Revolutionary Research Protocol

Fortunately for Eric and his loved ones, a revolutionary research protocol developed by Dr. Denis Claude Roy, Scientific Director of the University Institute of Hemato-oncology and Cellular Therapy, and his team, has the potential to treat his cancer. Hope begins to rekindle: Eric’s immune system will be replaced by that of his son thanks to a stem cell transplant.

On July 25, 2020, he celebrated the second anniversary of his transplant. Even though he can no longer work as a firefighter, Eric is getting on with his life, and it is thanks to you. Through your engagement and generosity, you are sources of healing.

Without you, without your support, such treatments would not exist. Your donations fund this innovative research and allow patients like Eric to access innovative lifesaving protocols.
