Veuve Clicquot: Montréal Passion Vin 2020 kicks off
6 October 2020
In keeping with tradition, even at home, Montréal Passion Vin begins with a champagne tasting. This year, participants have the chance to discover a Veuve Clicquot.
Veuve Clicquot House
Founded by Philippe Clicquot-Muiron in 1772, the company was first involved in the banking and wool trades, and … champagne production. Even if some sommeliers sometimes look down on big brands, Champagne would not be what it is today without Veuve Clicquot.
Production innovations together with its perseverance in gaining recognition for the region give this great house based in Reims undeniable historical importance. All the more so because the vineyards of Veuve Clicquot are almost entirely made up of Great Growths and First Growths.
We owe this wine heritage in particular to Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin, the famous “Veuve Clicquot.” She inherited the business from her late husband at the age of 27. Nicknamed the “Grande Dame de Champagne,” the first businesswoman of modern times had the flair to buy several plots in the best vintages, in Bouzy, Verzy or Verzenay around Reims.
Brut Millésimé 2008
It was also Madame Clicquot who launched the first vintage champagne in 1810. The concept became a huge success the following year, when the 1811 bottle was labelled “the year of the comet”.
The 2008 presented at the opening of Montréal Passion Vin 2020 is the 65th vintage of the House since the creation of the very first “vintage” champagne in 1810. As with every Veuve Clicquot champagne, the predominance of pinot noir (61%) gives its structure to the wine while the Chardonnay (34%) brings elegance and finesse. A small percentage of Pinot Meunier (5%) completes the blend. Note that, for many experts, 2008 is considered a great vintage, the best since the legendary 1990.
