New patient-centred cancer unit opens at Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont
1 February 2021
The Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont inaugurated a new cancer unit that will allow patients to receive their care in an environment specially designed to meet their needs.
As work began in April 2020, it took less than a year to construct this building, which accommodates cancer patients for long stays. The building, funded by the Quebec government, also helps to cope with the dilapidated infrastructure.
Improving the comfort and wellbeing of patients
Patients who fight cancer are immunosuppressed and therefore more likely to get infections. After a transplant or cell therapy treatment, they sometimes have to stay in their room for months. Thanks to this new building, designed to respond to this reality, their stay will be more pleasant and safe.
Indeed, each of the 36 rooms features a toilet and an individual shower. Each is also equipped with a controlled positive pressure system to limit the spread of germs and viruses. The unit has also been designed to let in as much daylight as possible.
Equipment to optimize patient care
Providing these vulnerable patients with a safe, comfortable, and intimate environment was a priority. The HMR Foundation has funded individual equipment that improves the well-being of patients on a daily basis, so that they almost feel at home. Thanks to the generosity of donors, each room has:
- A refrigerator and microwave for personal use to ensure food self-sufficiency and limit the risk of cross-contamination.
- Televisions* for entertainment and to keep spirits up between treatments.
Donations also supported the purchase of stationary bikes* and pedal exercisers*, allowing patients to exercise and thus maintain muscle mass.
Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont: A Hematology-Oncology and Cellular Therapy University Institute
In 2019, the HMR was designated as a Hematology-Oncology and Cellular Therapy University Institute, gaining worldwide recognition as a leader in this area and for the expertise of its physicians and researchers in developing cutting-edge clinical treatments.
The HMR Foundation created the Together for the HMR Fund and launched a campaign to provide the HMR with the resources needed to maintain excellence in care, research, and teaching, which are at the heart of the Hospital’s ability to deal with the pandemic, and future challenges. Join the movement by making a donation at fondationhmr.ca. You will help HMR’s teams to provide the best care, save lives and be prepared for any eventuality. Thank you for being a source of healing!
* Stationary bikes, pedals and televisions will be delivered and installed soon.
