More than 70 years old! Indeed, rooted in the east-end of Montréal since 1954, the HMR provides high-quality patient care through innovative and collaborative clinical practices that integrate knowledge sharing, teaching, and research.

The Hospital is part of the Centre intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux (CIUSSS) de l’Est-de-l’Île-de-Montréal which also includes:

• 2 hospitals: Maisonneuve-Rosemont and Santa Cabrini Ospedale;
• 1 Mental Health University Institute;
• 8 local community service centres (CLSC);
• 15 long-term-care centres (CHSLD).

2. What are the Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont’s areas of excellence?

SDo you know that the HMR has three areas of excellence? Such expertise stems from many years of hard work, the high-quality patient care provided, the contributions of renowned researchers and doctors, and the continuous support from our community.

The hospital is recognized nationally and internationally for its expertise in the following areas:

• Immunology-Oncology
• Ophthalmology
• Nephrology

In 2019, just in ophthalmology and nephrology, the number of unique patients treated at the HMR was over 35,000.

3. What is the world-recognized field of expertise of the Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont?

Cell therapy or stem cell treatments. Cell therapy is a way to harness the natural power of immune cells to repair tissue, detect malignant cells, and cure hitherto incurable diseases such as certain cancers and, ultimately, renal and ocular disorders, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and many others.

The Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont is home to one of the world’s largest stem cell therapy research centers. There are developed cutting-edge therapies that are already changing and saving lives, and revolutionizing the way we treat, and even cure, serious or incurable diseases, and cancer in particular.

4. Where do the Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont patients come from?

From everywhere! Although it is rooted in the east-end of Montréal, the HMR welcomes patients from all over Quebec owing to its specialties and unique expertise.

•  More than 26% of the visitors to the Hospital are from outside Montreal.
•  Among patients residing on the Island of Montreal, 17% live outside the catchment area of the CIUSSS de l’Est-de-Île-de-Montréal.

This means that in total nearly 50% of HMR patients are not from its catchment area.

The Foundation collaborated with some of these patients, who were more than willing to share their appreciation about the HMR’s compassionate staff and quality care. Among them were André Papineau, Eric Mackeage and François Quenot.

5. Which university is the Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont affiliated with?

Affiliated with Université de Montréal, the Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont welcomes more than 4,000 students each year, training them to become the next generation of doctors, nurses, and healthcare professionals.

Developing the medicine of tomorrow

Several scientific and medical research projects are conducted at HMR to develop new treatments and remedies, providing hope to people who suffer from hitherto incurable diseases.

HMR’s role as a teaching hospital was further enhanced when it was designated as a Hematology-Oncology and Cellular Therapy University Institute, in 2019, and as a University Center of Ophthalmology, in 2015.

Such designations consolidate the world-class leadership and expertise of the hospital in these areas. It also facilitates partnerships, which are key to expanding research and discovering new treatments.
